PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY
Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin film painted on the chewing surface of molars and premolars. Sealants are highly effective in the prevention of cavities. They block germs and food from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth.
Sealants act as a physical barrier to decay. Small food particles and bacteria that cause cavities cannot penetrate through or around a sealant.
Who should consider sealants?
The Process
The surface of the tooth is cleaned and rinsed to remove any cleaning agents. Next, a solution is applied to the enamel surface of the tooth. Shortly after the solution is rinsed away with water, and after the site has dried, the sealant material is applied and dried with a curing light. The process is completely painless.
Sealants are not permanent. However, they should last five years, and can last as long as 10 years. Regular check ups are essential to monitor the sealant bond to the tooth.
