Night Splints Prevent Tooth Breakage

You will probably hear Dr. Busch and Dr. VanYperen recommending an occlusal splint during sleep. This device stops tooth wear and tear by spreading out the pressure in your mouth much like a water lily’s leaf works to prevent a frog from sinking.

A bite splint also creates a physical barrier between your upper and lower teeth to protect them from further damage. Think of it like a football helmet’s facemask. It won’t stop you from getting hit, but it will stop chin-to-chin contact.

Mouth splints can lessen muscle activity in your jaw at night. But, be aware, they will only be able to protect your vulnerable teeth, not stop your bruxism.

You should also remember, occlusal splints are similar in appearance to mouth guards you wear for sports. Those mouth guards, however, just protect your teeth from being knocked out. They use cheaper materials, aren’t made specifically for your mouth and are not made to last. They would NOT save your teeth from night time grinding for very long. Most people with clenching and grinding issues chew through them in a matter of weeks.
